Ideology and Competence in Alternative Electoral Systems . ∗

چکیده
We develop a model of elections in proportional (PR) and majoritarian (FPTP) electoral systems. The model allows an endogenous number of candidates, differentiation in a private value dimension, or ideology, and in a common value dimension, which we interpret broadly as quality or competence. Voters are fully rational and strategic. We show that the quality of candidates running for office in PR elections is lower than that of any candidate running for office in FPTP, and that in all equilibria in which candidates are ideologically differentiated, the number of candidates running for office is larger than in majoritarian electoral systems (where exactly two candidates run). Moreover, we provide conditions under which the rankings are strict. We consider several extensions of the model, which include introducing majority premiums in PR, thresholds for representation, and multiple electoral districts. ∗We thank Juan Carrillo, Federico Echenique, Zucchero Fornaciari, Daniela Iorio, Alessandro Lizzeri, Jean-Laurent Rosenthal, and seminar participants at Caltech, Northwestern, Princeton, USC, the Workshop on the Political Economy of Democracy, the MPSA annual meeting, and the North American Summer Meeting of the Econometric Society, for helpful comments to previous versions of this paper. Ideology, Competence and Luck: What determines general election results?
This paper investigates the impact of luck, de ned as global economic growth, and competence, de ned as the di¤erence between domestic and world growth, on voting in general elections since 1960. This is consistent with the Clientele Hypothesis given electorates whi...
متن کاملIdeological Consumerism in Colombian Elections, 2015: Links Between Political Ideology, Twitter Activity, and Electoral Results

In this study we evaluate which of these factors exerted a major role in deciding electoral results of the 2015 Colombian reg...

This paper empirically evaluates whether government ideology and electoral motives influenced the growth of public health expenditures in 18 OECD countries over the 1971-2004 period. The results suggest that incumbents behaved opportunistically and increased the growth of public health expenditures in election years. Government ideology did not have an influence. These findings indicate (1) the...
متن کاملParties, Electoral Systems and Taxation 1870-1945
In this paper I argue that the effect of ideology on tax structure depends on the electoral system. Earlier research has argued that left wing governments tax more progressively, but in light of recent empirical work, this has been challenged. The dominant approach instead posits that the left taxes regressively while spending progressively. That is, the left still redistributes more, but it ta...
